Ready for vacation but the suitcases just won't fit in the trunk? For two weeks in Italy, Croatia or southern France with the whole family, normal boot space is rarely enough. Which roof box size for which trip?
As a rule of thumb:
- Couple, two weeks in the Mediterranean: 300 or 450 liters. Fits two suitcases, beach gear and some sports equipment.
- Family with one child, two weeks in Italy: 450 liters. Three suitcases plus stroller and beach kit fit comfortably.
- Family with two kids, two to three weeks on a long trip: 500 liters. The sweet spot for the classic family road trip.
- Large family or camping vacation with tent gear: 600 liters XXL. Room for camp chairs, smaller tents and bulkier equipment.
Which destinations do customers book a roof box for most often?
The most popular destinations our customers head to in summer: Italy (Adriatic coast, Tuscany, Lake Garda), Croatia (Istria, Dalmatia), France (Provence, Côte d'Azur, Atlantic coast), Austria (Carinthia, Salzburg region), Spain (Catalonia, Andalusia), and the Netherlands. One rule applies everywhere: book early. In July and August the 450- and 500-liter sizes are often fully booked weeks ahead.
What to know for trips abroad
- Speed limit: With a roof box, stick to 130 km/h even on German autobahns. Most neighboring countries have lower limits anyway.
- Warning sign for bike racks: Italy and Spain require the red-and-white striped warning board. We have them in stock and can add one to your rental.
- Low emission zones: Several Italian cities (Florence, Milan, Bologna) operate low emission zones. The German green sticker is not valid there – those cities require a separate permit.
- Toll systems: Austria needs a vignette (digital or sticker), while Italy and France charge tolls by distance.

Why book early?
In peak season between mid-June and late August, popular sizes are often booked out two to three weeks in advance. Especially during school holidays in Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Our tip: reserve at least four weeks before pickup – then you'll have free choice of size and pickup day.
