Roof Box for Small Cars and Compact SUVs: Which Size Fits?

For families on the Bergstrasse, the Odenwald is the nearest weekend destination. Whether mountain biking from Heppenheim, hiking around the Neunkircher Höhe or a weekend in Michelstadt – with kids, bikes and gear, the car gets tight quickly. The most common question we hear: "Will a roof box even fit on my small car?"

Short answer: yes, almost always. The slightly longer answer is in this article.

Two numbers that matter in your vehicle documents

Before you rent a roof box, check two values in your vehicle registration or manual:

  1. Permissible roof load (usually 50–100 kg)
  2. Roof mounting points (roof rails, fixed points, or a flat roof)

The permissible roof load is the total weight your roof can carry – including the rack, box, and cargo. This is usually the decisive limit, not the box size itself.

Example: With 75 kg roof load and 16 kg empty weight (rack + box), you have 59 kg left for cargo. That's enough for clothes, a stroller, and camping gear, but not three full suitcases of books or tools.

Small cars (Polo, Fiesta, Clio, Mini)

  • Recommended box size: 300 liters
  • Why not bigger: small cars often have only 50–75 kg roof load. A 450-liter box weighs 14–16 kg with rack – that limits payload noticeably.
  • Practice: ideal for a short trip for two, a stroller for your first child, weekend gear for a hiking trip.

Small cars usually aren't designed for roof bike racks – the center roof area (antenna, sensors) often can't take extra load. For bikes, better use a tow bar rack if available.

Compacts (Golf, Focus, Corsa, Astra)

  • Recommended box size: 300 or 450 liters
  • Permissible roof load: usually 75 kg
  • Practice: the 450-liter is the standard here. For a family with one child and two weeks of vacation, it works well.

Compacts with hatchbacks and no roof rails need a rack with a fixed-point system – we have it as standard and stock fitting kits for over 1,700 vehicle combinations.

Compact SUVs (Tiguan, Kuga, Qashqai, X1)

  • Recommended box size: 450 to 500 liters
  • Permissible roof load: usually 75–100 kg
  • Practice: probably the most common category for family vacations. The 500-liter is the sweet spot: plenty of room, acceptable aerodynamics, fits practically every compact SUV.

For SUV coupés with strongly sloping roofs (e.g. X4, Q3 Sportback, GLC Coupé), check before booking whether the roof rack aligns with the roof line. We advise by phone or email if you send us your vehicle model and year.

What fits in each box – Odenwald edition

Typical gear for an Odenwald weekend trip:

  • Two small suitcases / backpacks
  • Hiking gear (poles, rain jackets, change of clothes)
  • Stroller or child seat
  • Tent + sleeping bags (optional)

All of that fits comfortably in a 300-liter box, even with extra food. For a longer trip with tent camping, go with the 450 – then there's still room for a tool kit if you're traveling with an older camper.

The most common mistake: renting or buying too big

Many families rent too large a box the first time, worried it won't be enough. Result: they pay more, the car uses more fuel, and the box is often half empty. Our advice for first-timers: go one size smaller than your gut says. If you find it tight, you can simply go up a size next time.
