Rent or Buy a Roof Box? An Honest Decision Guide
We rent out roof boxes. And yet we sometimes recommend that customers buy instead. The reason: renting doesn't always pay off – and we'd rather give you honest advice than creative persuasion. This post shows when each approach makes sense.
The rough cost comparison
Buying a new, high-quality roof box (Thule or comparable):
- Roof box: €400–1,500 depending on size and model
- Roof rack: €200–400 depending on vehicle
- Total initial outlay: about €600–1,900
Plus one-time or recurring side costs:
- Mounting and dismounting each trip (time plus possibly tools)
- Storage between trips (basement, garage, attic – bulky, over 2 meters long)
- Care and possible repairs after 5–10 years
Renting from a provider like us:
- 300-liter box for one week: typically €50–80
- 500-liter box for two weeks: typically €150–220
- Roof rack: either included or €20–40 extra
- Mounting, advice, cleaning, insurance: included
The break-even point
Rough rule of thumb: a purchased roof box pays off when you use it regularly over many years. Specifically:
- Rare use (0–2 trips per year): renting is almost always cheaper
- Medium use (3–5 trips per year): break-even after about 4–5 years
- Frequent use (6+ trips per year): buying pays off faster, from year 3
But the cost comparison is only one side.
Reasons that favor buying – even with less frequent use
- You have plenty of storage space (own house with garage or basement)
- You keep the same vehicle for years and don't want repeated mounting briefings
- You value spontaneity – leaving on short notice, without booking ahead
- You're handy – mounting doesn't bother you
Reasons that favor renting
- You have limited storage space – especially common in cities. A roof box is 2 meters long and 40–50 cm tall; it takes real space.
- You change cars often (leasing, company car, shifting family car)
- You use it 1–3 times per year – usually exactly the category that wonders whether buying pays off
- You want size flexibility – 300 liters for a city trip, 600 liters for winter vacation
- You want professional mounting and briefing – each time you rent, someone experienced makes sure everything is secure
The swap factor
An often-underestimated point: if you buy a roof box and change cars after 4 years, the roof rack often doesn't fit anymore. A new rack (for the new vehicle) then costs €200–400 extra. With renting this isn't an issue – we stock roof racks for over 1,700 vehicle combinations.
The math many do too late
If you bought a €900 roof box and end up using it 4 times, you paid €225 per trip – without rack, storage, or any repairs. Renting typically costs €100–200 per week.
The other direction: if you use a roof box regularly over 8+ years and maybe take 60 trips with it, your per-trip cost drops to €15–20 – now it's really cheap.
Our honest recommendation
- You're unsure how often you'll need a roof box: rent for 2–3 years first, then decide. By then you'll know from experience what fits your family.
- You have a clear plan (e.g. ski + summer vacation every year for 10 years): do the math on buying; from year 4–5 it often pays off.
- You live in a city apartment in Groß-Gerau, Rüsselsheim or the area: renting is almost always the right choice. Storage often doesn't pay off either in space or economically.
